Debut Solo Exhibit Fundraiser
DEBUT SOLO EXHIBITION
Several months ago, I was invited to have a solo exhibition at a local non-profit gallery. I’ve recently accepted the offer and met with the gallery to finalize a date! Very exciting! The exhibition will open during the Art Hop on September 1st, 2017.
I will be created an entirely new body of work, around 12-15 paintings and drawings. From today, this gives me 6-8 months to complete every painting!
This is both exciting and daunting, but I have complete faith that I will accomplish it with some old fashioned hard work, and your support!
What would your generous contribution do?
Your support would allow me to completely immerse myself into a new body of work by assisting with the investment of time and materials needed to create it.
Any contribution, no matter how small, would assist with:
Monthly living expenses
Related travel expenses
Cost of framing
I know that this opportunity and your support will be instrumental to my success in this exhibition and in my career thereafter.
What is the exhibition about?
The theme of my debut solo exhibition is Beauty and the Sublime. My series investigates the point at which beauty transfigures into the sublime touching on something central to our existence.
In regards to aesthetics and art, the sublime describes a greatness beyond all possibility whether moral, intellectual, spiritual, or artistic. The sublime, often inspires awe and elevates the viewer above the mundane of daily life. Great art can “shock us” awake, like a jolt of lightening. It lures us with beauty and moves us spiritually.
One could ask what’s the point of dwelling on old idea, how can beauty and the sublime be relevant to modern life? The great Romantic painter Eugene Delacroix wrote “What moves men of genius, or rather what inspires their work, is not new ideas, but their obsession with the idea that what has already been said is still not enough.” While I have no claims to genius, beauty and the sublime is a boundless subject for me.
In his BBC documentary Why Beauty Matters, the contemporary philosopher Roger Scruton warns us that we may find ourselves in a spiritual desert if we ignore our need for beauty, that beauty is essential to humanity's health and happiness. What would your life mean without beauty? Beauty gives my work meaning and purpose. I consider it a blessing to spend my life pursuing beauty and the sublime through painting, but it is not only for myself. Through this exhibit, I hope to share with you my reverence for beauty and that the sublime experience is still worthy of our wonderment in both art and life.
